Cushioning Moderate

The Zinal 2 prioritizes a close-to-ground feel and precise stride. The cushioning is sufficient to protect over short to intermediate distances, while maintaining a more "racing" profile than a maximalist model.

Responsiveness High

Light, snappy, and easy to pick up: it's a shoe made for running at pace, accelerating uphill, and "attacking" downhill. It excels when you want performance without a carbon plate.

Why Upgrade to the Hoka Zinal 2?

The Hoka Zinal 2 is aimed at trail runners who want a fast, precise, and secure shoe, without feeling "elevated." Lighter and sharper, it retains the DNA of the range (agility, ground feel), while improving support and grip to gain confidence at high speed.

A "Race" Shoe: Lightweight and Precision

The Zinal 2 is designed as a racing shoe: it feels like nothing on your foot and promotes a natural stride. The platform remains relatively close to the ground for excellent terrain feedback.

The result: faster footstrikes, better precision in direction changes, and an "agile" feel that fast trail runners seek on short formats.

Responsive EVA Foam: Bounce Without a Plate

The midsole features lightweight and dynamic EVA: firm enough to push hard on toe-off, but protective enough to not suffer on rough trails.

It's an excellent recipe for those who want performance and stability in footstrike, without the rigidity of a carbon plate.

Stretch-Knit Collar: Less Debris, More Comfort

The knit collar, like a "mini-gaiter," helps limit the entry of dust and small pebbles, especially on dry trails. The sensation around the ankle is more enveloping, with a performance-oriented fit.

The fit remains snug: perfect for running fast, but to consider if you have wide feet or prefer very generous toe-boxes.

Vibram® Megagrip Litebase: Grip and Efficiency

The outsole uses Vibram® Megagrip with a Litebase construction (lighter) and 5 mm lugs (Traction Lug) to improve traction uphill and braking downhill.

The Zinal 2 is very comfortable on mixed trails, rocks, roots, and loose terrain. For very deep mud, a "mud" model with more aggressive lugs will be more suitable.

Hoka Zinal 2: For Which Type of Runner?

The Ideal Runner

  • Weight: The Zinal 2 is particularly appreciated by runners of light to medium build who want a fast and precise shoe. For heavier builds, it remains possible for short formats, but may seem a bit "minimalist" in cushioning over very long distances.
  • Gait Type: Model for universal gait. The snug fit and relatively low-to-ground platform provide natural stability, without being a correction shoe.

The Perfect Use

  • Technical Terrain: Very effective when the terrain remains "runnable" but uneven: rocks, roots, fast singletrack. Its performance fit and Vibram outsole help maintain confidence.
  • Ultra-Trail: The Zinal 2 is rather designed for short to intermediate formats (up to 40–60 km depending on your experience and tolerance). For very long ultras, a more cushioned model will often be more comfortable.
  • Daily Training: Ideal in rotation for rhythmic sessions on trails, "tempo" runs, and days when you want a lightweight shoe. For daily volume accumulation, many will prefer a more protective trail shoe.

What Size to Choose for the Hoka Zinal 2?

The Zinal 2 offers a race-oriented fit: close to the foot, locked-down midfoot, and a more enveloping knit collar. The whole setup promotes precision, but the shoe may feel more snug than a classic training model.

Our advice: Take your usual running size. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one, especially if you plan descents or long runs.

Wide feet? The fit is rather "performance." If you have wide feet, a half size up (and adapted lacing) can improve comfort and limit pressure points.

FAQ – Hoka Zinal 2

The Zinal 2 retains the "trail racing" concept but improves everything: more secure fit (stretch-knit collar), enhanced grip (5 mm lugs), and a sharper feel. The goal is to gain confidence and efficiency at high speed, while keeping the signature lightness.

It excels on short to intermediate formats (short trail, "runnable" skyrunning, 20 to 50 km). It can go further if you are used to lightweight shoes, but that's not its main DNA.

Yes, as long as the terrain remains relatively "runnable." Its precise fit and Vibram outsole provide good security on rocks, roots, and uneven trails. For very unstable scree or very rough ultra-trails, a more protective shoe may be more comfortable.

On short connecting sections, yes. However, it is not recommended for 100% road use: the 5 mm lugs will wear out faster and the feel will be less smooth than a dedicated road shoe.

No, the standard version is not waterproof: it prioritizes breathability and water drainage. The Zinal 2 is a "race" shoe and focuses on lightness rather than a GTX-type membrane.

It generally fits true to size, but with a rather snug fit (performance profile). If you are between sizes or have wide feet, a half size up can improve comfort.

The Vibram® Megagrip rubber is a reference in grip, even on wet rocks. The Litebase construction lightens the shoe, and the 5 mm lugs (Traction Lug) provide traction uphill and braking downhill on loose terrain.

Depending on your terrain and frequency of use, expect generally 400 to 600 km. Very abrasive paths and asphalt connections accelerate wear; soft trails extend longevity.
