The midsole has been reworked with a new EVA foam that is lighter and softer.
The goal is to increase comfort on asphalt sections ("door") without losing the stability needed once you hit the trails ("trail"). The weight-to-cushioning ratio is one of the best in its category.
The upper uses recycled technical mesh that is more breathable. The foot support is secure without being compressive, offering excellent volume for long runs where the foot tends to swell.
The heel has been extended (pull tab) to make it easier to put on and protect the Achilles tendon.
The outsole uses Durabrasion Rubber™. Unlike a pure trail shoe, the lugs are 4 mm and more tightly spaced in the center.

The Challenger 8 offers a standard fit, generally a bit more forgiving (wider) than that of a Speedgoat. The comfort is immediate.
Our advice: As with most running shoes, take one size up from your usual street shoe size to leave room for your toes on descents.
Wide feet? Although the fit is comfortable, Hoka often offers a "Wide" version for those who need more volume in the metatarsal area.
It's a matter of terrain. The Challenger is a hybrid (4mm lugs, harder rubber) designed to alternate between road and easy trails. The Speedgoat is a pure trail shoe (5mm lugs, Vibram Megagrip) for technical, muddy, and alpine terrain.
Technically yes, because the cushioning is sufficient and comfortable. However, it will be a bit heavier and less dynamic than a Clifton or a Mach dedicated 100% to the road. It is perfect for road training, but less so for pure performance on asphalt.
On slightly greasy paths, it performs well. However, in deep mud or clay, its 4 mm lugs, which are closer together, risk "clogging" (retaining dirt) faster than a Mafate or Speedgoat. This is not its preferred terrain.
Yes, the Challenger range usually offers a Gore-Tex (GTX) version. This is ideal for keeping your feet dry during winter runs or in wet grass, although it is slightly less breathable than the standard mesh version.
The presence of Durabrasion rubber reinforcements in wear areas gives it good durability, similar to a robust road shoe. You can aim for between 600 and 800 km depending on your usage (asphalt wears down the lugs faster than dirt).
Absolutely. The amount of foam under the foot is significant (high stack), which offers excellent shock absorption for runners over 85 kg, thus preserving the back and knees.
