MTB Headsets

The bike headset: an essential part of driving

The bike headset is essential in guiding your bike since it allows to rotate the fork and therefore the front wheel.

The MTB headset is the same as the road headset, it's made up of parts with ball bearings that fit into the steering tube of the frame. Concretely, this is a high bottom bracket shell and a low one with bearings in which the steering tube passes.

Different types of headset

  • Screw-on headset: the fork's pivot is held by a nut and a locking ring nut.
  • Standard headset (Aheadset): the most common headset, the bearings are located outside the steering tube.
  • Semi-integrated headset: the bearings are semi-integrated between the cup and the bottom bracket shell.
  • Integrated headset: the bearings are integrated into the bottom bracket shell.

There are several sizes for the MTB headset depending on the diameter of your fork: 1" (25.4 mm), 1" 1/8 (28.6 mm), 1" ¼ (31.8 mm) and 1" ½ (38.1 mm).
