Flat pedals

The flat pedal offers more freedom as there is no fastening system like on the clipless pedals. These pedals are appreciated by downhill enthusiasts, for example, because they can easily remove their feet from the pedal in times of need. The manufacturers always give particular care to the strap. For optimum grip, the flat pedals are often covered with studs, so watch out for injuries if you slip: knee pads are recommended!

The choice of your MTB flat pedal will therefore rely a lot on the type of strap you want.

Flat Pedals

There are two kind of MTB pedals: flat and clipless pedals.
MTB flat pedals offer a freedom of movement as the rider's shoes are not attached to the pedals.
Platform pedals appeal to gravity riders such as Freeriders and Downhillers as they offer a quick placement of the foot which is essential in some disciplines.
Flat pedals are not synonym with no grip. Manufacturers are working on the design to offer pedals with multiple pins or spikes. To optimise the grip, you should consider a pair of skate-style shoes when buying mountain bike flat pedals.
Be careful, shin pads may be useful to prevent injuries when your feet are slipping off the pedals!
