How to bleed your disc brakes?


As with the fork, annual maintenance of your Road or MTB brakes is recommended. Beware, however, that suitable equipment and skills are required for this operation!
Required tools: Bleed kit / Torx spanner / 6 mm open-end spanner / brake fluid recommended by the brand


Bleeding disc brakes: step 1

Step 1

Unscrew the lever bleed screw with a Torx spanner and place a cloth on the side of the handlebar to absorb any fluid leaks.

Step 2

Screw an empty syringe in place of the bleed screw. Remove the pads from the caliper and replace them with a shim.

Step 3

Unscrew the bleed screw from the caliper using a Torx key and wrap the caliper in a cloth.

Step 4

Screw a full syringe of DOT 5.1 onto the bleed screw on the caliper and push the fluid up into the empty syringe at the lever.

Step 5

Pump with the top syringe until there are no more air bubbles in the system.

Step 6

Remove the syringes, then re-install the bleed screws on the lever and caliper and replace the brake pads.

Step 7

Clean the lever and caliper with a degreaser to remove all traces of DOT, which remains a very corrosive product.
