Your MTB transmission is an essential set of components that, associated with the brakes, constitutes the groupset of your bike. On the drivetrains components market of MTB, two brands share the market: Shimano and SRAM. The MTB transmission thus includes the shifters, the front and rear derailleur, the chain, the cassette, the the cranks, the chainring, the bottom bracket and the cables.
Today, the single-chainring transmission has taken over and thus the front derailleur tends to disappear. SRAM and Shimano offer different versions of their flagship groupsets (Deore, SLX, XT and XTR for Shimano and SX, NX, GX, X01 and XX1 for Sram) in single chainring.
Depending on your discipline, you won't have the same transmission needs. The choice of the staggering of your cassette and chainring impacts speeds and efficiency which will be extensively different between a 3x9 speeds setup and a 1x12s drivetrain. So if you do downhill, opt for a solid transmission and a mono-chainring with a 7 speeds cassette and derailleur.
