The triathlete is confronted with a double requirement: to drive as fast as possible and to manage their forces in order to retain the maximum energy and then compete in the running trial that directly follows the cycling event. The search for aerodynamics is essential for triathlon, as in a time trial. Brand research and development teams are constantly changing materials and shapes to improve aerodynamics. The design of triathlon helmets is tested in a wind tunnel in order to have the best possible aerodynamic profile whatever the position of the head (lowered, raised, turned), which leads today to a specific helmet design, different from a classic road bike helmet.Triathlon helmets are lightweight, very elongated so that there is no gap between the back and the neck. They are often provided with a sun visor, removable, liftable or not. But aerodynamics alone won't suffice for the quality of a triathlon helmet. Like any bicycle helmet, don't forget that the first function of the helmet is to ensure the safety of the cyclist. The helmet must be sturdy and protect the head in the event of an accident; the double hull helmets meet this double requirement: the outer shell, hard, resists to shocks; the softer inner shell acts as a shock absorber.
The triathlon helmet should be lightweight and ventilated (for comfort). With regard to this ventilation, very well-shaped sorting helmets have fewer vents (or not at all) than conventional helmets, so as not to impair aerodynamics. Successful helmets reduce airflow to the head while maintaining excellent ventilation. The helmet attachment system must allow for a perfect stability of the helmet on the head so as not to impair safety.
