Track Bike – specific equipment

Track cycling refers to a discipline of cycling that takes place in a velodrome. The velodrome can be indoors but also outdoors.

Within the discipline, there are several practices such as sprint, keirin, pursuit, etc. This requires the use of a specific bicycle, the track bike.
It stands out from other bikes due to a rather minimalist design and the use of a fixed gear.

The track bike

The shape of a track bike is close to a road bike with a dropped handlebar, similar geometry, and thin wheels. The fundamental difference concerns the drivetrain since the track bike has only one gear and stands out by the absence of derailleurs and brakes.

Indeed, the fixed-gear bike used on the track has no freewheel, so the cyclist must continuously pedal to move forward. Braking is also done with the legs to slow down before leaving the track lap.

Aerodynamics, stiffness and materials

On the boards or concrete of a velodrome, energy loss is not permitted. The frames of these machines are therefore designed to offer absolute stiffness. High-end carbon and aluminum are the preferred materials for manufacturers to withstand the extreme stresses imposed during explosive starts. Aerodynamics plays an equally vital role. Each tube is profiled to cut through the air as efficiently as possible. Wheels often adopt very deep profiles, ranging to full disc wheels, known as lenticular, or baton wheels, to maximize air penetration and maintain high speed.

The track bike: a radical geometry for performance

The posture on such a machine is resolutely aggressive and tilted forward. The bottom bracket is raised compared to a traditional bicycle to prevent the pedals from hitting the track in the banked turns. The cranks are generally shorter to favor a very high pedaling cadence, an essential characteristic during sprints or keirin events. The plunging stem and specific handlebar allow for an optimal aerodynamic position, thus reducing the frontal area exposed to the wind.

Selection criteria for a track machine

The acquisition of such equipment requires taking into account the level of practice and the targeted events. Endurance will require relative comfort, while pure sprinting will demand an uncompromising machine. The choice of gear ratio, through the chainring and sprocket, is the only mechanical adjustment variable available on the bike. It is also essential to study the stiffness of the crankset and the quality of the bearings. To deepen these technical aspects and find the perfectly suitable model, it is recommended to consult a guide on how to choose a track bike, which details all the crucial parameters before any investment.
