The use of a kickstand for bicycles relies on simple mechanics: providing stable support for the bike when it is stationary. The two main types—side and center—meet different needs. The side kickstand, with its metal leg folding backward, is typically attached near the rear wheel or under the pedal crank. Its simple installation makes it a popular solution for city bikes or lightweight models, where only a few kilograms need to be supported.
The center kickstand, on the other hand, attaches under the pedal crank at the center of the frame and can be single or double-legged. It provides very effective vertical support for the bike, particularly useful for heavier or loaded bikes such as touring bikes, electric-assist models, or utility bikes. Double-legged versions further enhance stability by distributing the weight over two support points. Generally more robust and bulkier, these kickstands require more careful attachment and a suitable location on the frame to avoid any contact with the derailleur.
Several factors guide the choice of a kickstand: wheel size, necessary load capacity, and compatibility with the frame. Preferred materials are aluminum for its lightness or steel for greater robustness. Some models are height-adjustable; this feature is appreciated if the bike's configuration changes, whether for transporting loads or shared use. One should also ensure the presence of a non-slip rubber foot to prevent any slipping on smooth surfaces.
The side kickstand excels in lightness and simplicity, ideal for quick stops; however, it may lack stability on uneven surfaces or under load. In contrast, the center kickstand, and even more so the double-legged version, offers valuable upright support for the bike during trips with panniers, child seats, or batteries. Adjustable models allow adaptation to various contexts but often involve longer installation and slightly more weight. It is essential to ensure that the chosen attachment perfectly matches the bike to guarantee the durability of the installation.
