Garmin Varia: Garmin's Expertise for Cycling Safety

The Garmin Varia family has established itself as a reference in safety devices for cyclists. Since the launch of the first rear radar in 2015, the range has expanded to meet all uses: from urban cycle touring to road sports outings. All radar models share a central function: detecting vehicles approaching from behind and alerting the cyclist via visual and auditory signals. This technology, compatible with Edge computers, Garmin watches, and the dedicated mobile app, offers better vigilance without diverting attention from the road.

Models Adapted to Each Practice

The Varia RTL515 combines radar and a powerful rear light, visible up to 1.6 km in broad daylight. It offers several lighting modes, including a "peloton" mode for group rides. Lighter, the RVR315 retains the radar function without integrating a light, making it discreet and accessible for urban use. The newer RCT715 adds an HD rear camera with incident detection, automatically recording sequences in case of impact or sudden braking. Finally, the eRTL615 model is designed for electric assist bikes, connecting directly to the bike's battery.

Front Lighting and Onboard Recording

The range is not limited to the rear of the bike. The Varia UT800 is an intelligent front light that automatically adjusts its power based on speed and ambient brightness. As for the Varia Vue, it combines a front LED light and an integrated camera, recording journeys in 1080p. These devices complete the Varia ecosystem by offering complete visual coverage, day and night.

Managed Connectivity and Autonomy

All devices in the Varia range use ANT+ and Bluetooth protocols to synchronize with Garmin devices or smartphones via the dedicated app. Autonomy varies depending on the models and usage modes: up to 16 hours in daytime flash mode for the RTL515, about 6 hours for the RCT715 with active video recording, and up to 7 hours for the Varia Vue in mixed mode. The devices recharge via micro-USB or USB-C depending on the versions.

Garmin Varia - FAQ

What is the difference between the Garmin Varia RTL515, RVR315, and RCT715?

The RTL515 combines a radar and a powerful rear light. The RVR315 is limited to radar without a light. The RCT715 integrates radar, a light, and a rear camera with automatic recording in case of an incident.

Are Garmin Varia devices compatible with other brands of bike computers?

Garmin Varia devices are compatible with Garmin Edge bike computers and some third-party applications, such as Ride with GPS or Wahoo, provided the device supports the ANT+ Radar protocol.

What is the detection range of Garmin Varia radars?

Garmin Varia radars detect vehicles up to 140 meters behind. This range remains stable even in low light or varying weather conditions.

Can you use a Varia in a group without disturbing other cyclists?

Yes, models like the RTL515 and RCT715 have a "peloton" mode that reduces the brightness of the rear light to avoid dazzling other cyclists while keeping the radar function active.

What is the battery life of the different Garmin Varia models?

The RTL515 offers up to 16 hours of battery life in daytime flash mode, the RCT715 lasts about 6 hours with the camera active, and the Varia UT800 up to 7 hours. The devices recharge via USB cable (micro-USB or USB-C depending on the model).
