SRAM has become, in a few years, the true engine of innovation in the field of MTB transmission, and a major player in road and Gravel. An essential part of this performance, the SRAM cassette is designed for efficiency, lightness and, above all, to offer an unparalleled range of gear ratios. Thanks to exclusive technologies like the Eagle ecosystem for 1x drivetrains and XD/XDR freehub bodies, Sram cassettes allow cyclists to tackle any terrain with precision, whether for competition or recreational use.

Sram cassette technologies: the 1x revolution

SRAM has largely popularized the single-chainring drivetrain (1x), which required the development of cassettes capable of offering the same versatility as a double chainring. This evolution is based on specific architectures like X-DOME and on unique freehub body standards.

Sram Eagle cassettes: excellence in MTB

The Eagle ecosystem, available from the XX SL, X0, GX, and NX series, is the benchmark for 12-speed MTB drivetrains. These Sram cassettes are characterized by a very wide gear range (often 10-50 or 10-52 teeth), allowing riders to climb the steepest slopes while maintaining speed on descents. High-end models, such as the XX SL T-Type Eagle series, use lightweight materials and advanced constructions (X-DOME, steel machining) for radical weight savings and increased durability.

The XD and XDR standard: the innovation of the small cog

To achieve these wide gear ranges, SRAM invented the XD freehub body standard (for MTB) and XDR (for road and Gravel). This standard allows the integration of a 10-tooth cog, crucial for increasing the maximum ratio and high-speed efficiency. If you choose a high-performance SRAM cassette, you will need a compatible XD or XDR freehub body.

Sram Road and Gravel cassette ranges

On road and Gravel, SRAM stands out with its 12-speed drivetrains and its focus on single-chainring (XPLR) or compact double-chainring (Force/Rival) setups.

Sram XPLR cassettes: Gravel versatility

The XPLR (Explore) series is specifically designed for Gravel and light MTB. These Sram cassettes (like the SRAM Force XPLR or SRAM Rival XPLR) offer specific gearing (for example, 10-44T in 12-speed) optimized for the balance between rolling sections and steep Gravel climbs. They are characterized by small spacing between the smaller cogs to maintain a regular cadence on asphalt, and a large gap on the larger cogs for off-road challenges.

Sram Road: performance for the road

For the road, Sram Red, Force, and Rival cassettes (such as the SRAM Rival XG 1250 or SRAM Force XG 1270) are designed for fast and precise gear changes, often with tighter gearing than their MTB counterparts. They are often used in conjunction with SRAM eTap AXS electronic groupsets, offering complete drivetrain customization.

Choosing and maintaining your Sram cassette

The choice of your SRAM cassette will depend on the number of speeds of your groupset (11-speed or 12-speed), your freehub body (XD/XDR for high-end, or standard HG for some entry-level ranges like NX/SX), and your riding style. Sram cassettes benefit from advanced surface treatments to extend their lifespan. To maintain their performance, regular cleaning to remove mud and abrasion is essential, as is regular chain replacement, to prevent premature wear of the cogs.
