It was in 1949 in Japan that the Asics brand was born under the leadership of Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka. Very quickly, the brand established itself in the sports world.
First in basketball, then from 1950 in running during the Boston Marathon with the victory of Ham Kee-Yong who ran with Tiger shoes.
Following the victory of the Japanese women's volleyball team wearing Tiger shoes at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the brand, still known as Onitsuka, began to be distributed in the United States. It was from this date that the characteristic stripes of the brand appeared on the sides.
At the end of the 1970s, sports shoes saw considerable improvements, and the brand's popularity increased among athletes. In 1977, Asics was officially born, an acronym for Anima Sana In Corpore Sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body) during the merger between Onitsuka Tiger and GTO Sports Nets & Sportswear. The brand thus highlighted its philosophy based on a healthy and sporty lifestyle.
Since then, Asics has not stopped innovating and developing, both in creating shoes adapted to the specifics of the female foot and in research to meet the needs of athletes. In the 1980s, Asics revolutionized its range thanks to its GEL cushioning system, located at the front and rear of the foot to absorb maximum shock.
Even today, the brand continues to innovate, thanks in particular to its research and development center still based in Japan, and its desire to offer products that are increasingly adapted to athletes, including sports clothing. But Asics, the leader in the running shoe market, particularly thanks to its two flagship products, the GEL NIMBUS and the GEL KAYANO, would certainly not have had the same success if Kihachiro Onitsuka's mother had not served him pickled octopus for dinner: the manager was indeed inspired by the suction cups of the octopus to offer his shoes a sufficient level of adhesion, necessary during sports practice.
