Maintain your E-Bike
How to maintain your e-bike
An E-Bike or E-Mountainbike like any other bicycle, needs regular maintenance. It is advisable to do a quick check after every long ride to be ready for the next adventure at any time. Otherwise, the components should be checked every month. This is not very time-consuming and rarely requires an expert. For fun and enjoyment, it is absolutely necessary to take care of your bike.
E-bike battery maintenance
The battery deserves special attention when maintaining the E-bike. Therefore, the manufacturer's instructions for storage, temperature and behaviour in case of falls or shocks should be observed. If a bicycle battery is not used for a long period of time (several weeks or even months), it should be removed from the bicycle and stored in a room of approximately 20°degrees without direct sunlight. Below -10°C or above 50°C the temperature is too dangerous and the battery should never be used for rides. In the event of a fall, shock or drop, the battery may not be able to be switched on. In this case, it must be returned to the manufacturer or changed.
If you clean the whole bike with water, it is essential to remove the battery. Furthermore, E-bikes should not be cleaned with high-pressure cleaners. The water could enter the motor bearing and damage it. It is advisable to clean the bike only with water, soapy water or bicycle cleaners. These do not attack the connecting parts and the plastic components. If the washing-up liquid from the kitchen is not too aggressive, this can also be used. It is best to clean the bicycle with a damp cloth.
Due to the motor power and the higher average speed when riding an E-bike, some parts wear out faster. It is therefore necessary to check these very parts regularly and carefully: the cassette, the brakes, the chain, the tyres… If you do not replace a defective part in time, this can lead to a snowball effect and accelerate the wear of other parts. Repairing several parts is then more expensive and also more difficult. The parts can of course also be damaged by the use of the bike. If you often ride an E-bike in the forest, dust, soil and small stones can get into the braking or drive system and can cause damage there.
E-Bike during winter
During winter, your E-bike should be greased and always kept clean. If it is not used during the winter months, the battery should be removed and stored separately as described above. Before removing for storage, the battery should be charged between 20% and 60% in order not to lose any of its own runtime.
By the way, snow is not an issue at all for the use of the E-bike, because they are very robust. To keep it in good condition, you only have to dry it well and remove snow and salt residues.
