Top 4 best hardtail mountain bikes

Let’s start this ranking with the best hardtail mountain bikes. These are equipped with a single suspension at the front, recommended for moderately rough terrains. A hardtail mountain bike will be lighter and cheaper than a full suspension mountain bike. It is recommended for leisure practice. Finally, for cross-country practice, it has the advantage of being more efficient than a full suspension when pedaling because the shock absorber in the latter absorbs part of the traction effort.

The Cube Attention Pro sets the standard in the mid-range segment under 1,000 euros. While many entry-level bikes require compromises regarding suspension or drivetrain, Cube delivers a package here that provides a true mountain bike feeling. It is the ideal choice for ambitious hobby riders looking for a reliable bike for forest paths, gravel roads, and first singletracks.

At its heart is the high-quality Aluminium Lite frame, which is lightweight yet extremely stiff thanks to the double-butting process (varying wall thicknesses). A real highlight in this price range is the RockShox Judy Silver TK Air suspension fork. Unlike a conventional coil-sprung fork, this air fork can be precisely adjusted to the rider's weight and offers the option to completely lock the fork for steep climbs via the "PopLoc" handlebar lever.

Cube doesn't cut corners on the drivetrain either: the Shimano XT 12-speed rear derailleur introduces a component normally found on professional bikes. Combined with the Deore cassette (10-51 teeth), the bike offers a massive gear range to confidently conquer even the steepest ramps. Meanwhile, the hydraulic Shimano BR-MT200 brakes ensure easily modulated and safe stopping power in all weather conditions. This makes the Attention Pro an extremely well-rounded total package for anyone seeking a durable, high-performance hardtail without breaking the bank.

Mondraker Chrono, the best mountain bike in terms of price-quality-weight ratio

FeaturesDetails
FrameAluminum: Chrono 29 Stealth Alloy, internal cable routing HHG

BrakesSram Level, 2-piece caliper, one-piece Centerline 160/160 mm IS 6-bolt rotor, hydraulic disc brakes
Weight12.9 kg
Type of MTB useCross-country

Let's continue this comparison with a nice step up with the Mondraker Chrono Sram 12V 29''. Here we stay under 1000 euros with Mondraker offering a very interesting bike especially for its price-weight ratio. It is the lightest in this price range. For this, the Chrono is built around a 6061 Xtralite tapered aluminum frame, benefiting from Mondraker’s XC Forward Geometry. This design aims for an optimized pedaling position while ensuring stability on descents. The strength of this Chrono is also being well equipped. You will find a Sram SX Eagle 1x12 speed drivetrain, a coherent setup for versatile cross-country riding. Regarding suspension, we also find a big brand with a RockShox Judy Silver TK fork with 100 mm travel, tapered steerer and Poplock lockout. Finally, Sram is also involved with the Level hydraulic disc brakes of 160 mm which are a common choice at this level. The MDK-XP1 29 TLR wheels and Maxxis Ikon 2.20 tires, 60 TPI, confirm a focus on versatility and durability, with a Tubeless Ready option for future upgrade.

In comparison, with other models in this comparison, the Mondraker Chrono clearly positions itself above the Trek Marlin 4 in terms of specs, notably with its 1x12 speed Sram SX Eagle drivetrain against an 8-speed Shimano on the Trek. This gain in ratios and smoothness justifies the price gap. In our opinion, it’s an excellent entry point for a more committed XC practice than the Marlin 4, without aiming for extreme lightness or precision components of carbon frames. This MTB will be perfect for you if you want to start cross-country or upgrade a beginner mountain bike.

Cube Reaction C:62 One, the best accessible carbon MTB

FeaturesDetails

CranksetAcid MTB Pro, 32 teeth
BrakesShimano BR-MT410, Hydraulic disc brakes (180/160)
Weight12.5 kg
Type of MTB useCross-country

The Cube Reaction C:62 One positions itself as a relevant option for riders seeking access to a carbon frame (and thus all its efficiency and comfort over the long term without irreversibly breaking your savings). The core of this MTB lies in its C:62® carbon frame, made using Advanced Twin Mold technology. This material, combined with organic lines and slender seatstays, aims to minimize weight and optimize responsiveness. On the trail, this results in better vibration absorption and increased efficiency on climbs, two attributes sought after in cross-country. The Agile Ride geometry, integrated seat collar, and semi-integrated cable routing contribute to a sleek aesthetic and reactive handling, while UDH compatibility ensures some future-proofing.

However, at this price, technical compromises are inevitable. The Shimano Deore XT 1x12 drivetrain is a solid component offering a wide gear range with a 10-51 teeth cassette and a 32 teeth crankset. On the other hand, the RockShox Recon Silver RL AIR fork, although adjustable and functional with 100 mm travel, represents a mid-level equipment choice compared to more expensive competitors. Similarly, the Shimano BR-MT410 brakes are effective but show a difference from higher-end groups. With a weight of 12.5 kg, the Reaction C:62 One sits in an acceptable middle ground for an entry-level carbon. We would thus recommend this Reaction C:62 One to riders who want to benefit from the advantages of a carbon frame on a contained budget, without aiming for the extreme performance associated with the highest-end drivetrains or suspensions.

Cube Phenix C:68X, the best hardtail MTB in 2026

Type of MTB ridingCross-Country, Marathon

We finish this selection of hardtails with the Cube Phenix C:68X. Its design aims for absolute lightness without compromising stiffness and control. The structure of this MTB is based on a frame made of C:68X® Monocoque Advanced Twin Mold Technology carbon. This material guarantees a particularly low weight, announced at 8.6 kg for the complete bike, a figure that places it among the lightest in its category. The design incorporates a fully internal cable routing and an integrated seat collar, details that contribute both to the sleek aesthetics and enhanced component protection. A notable technical point is the adjustable angle headset (via inserts) which offers the possibility to fine-tune the cockpit geometry, allowing the rider to adapt the bike to their preferences or the specifics of the terrain, ranging between 68.4° and 69° for the head angle.

On the transmission side, Cube chose an electronic Sram XX SL Eagle AXS 1x12-speed groupset equipped with a power sensor integrated into the crankset, offering precise gear changes and real-time effort analysis. As a German brand, the brakes are also German with Magura MT8 SL, featuring 180/160 mm discs. For suspension, you’ll find the Fox 32 SC Factory fork, Kashima Coated, with 100 mm of travel and a two-position lockout. Finally, the carbon wheels are Newmen Phase 30 XC VONOA, mounted with Schwalbe Racing Ray and Racing Ralph tires in 29x2.25", which also contribute to the overall lightness and grip. In short, an excellent MTB for anyone who prioritizes lightness above all.

Top 5 best full-suspension mountain bikes

Our second part of this ranking will be dedicated to the best full-suspension mountain bikes. These feature both front suspension and a rear shock. On very rough terrain, the dual suspension provides comfort and traction as well as good handling. Full-suspension MTBs are recommended for sporty riding or competition; they will offer good performance on technical trails or for an engaged discipline such as Enduro. However, the suspension will absorb some of the energy and may not necessarily be suitable for cross-country. In that case, a hardtail MTB will be more suitable, lighter and with better pedaling efficiency on trails. You should also keep in mind that the shock adds weight to the bike as well as its price.

Scott Spark 970 12V 29, the best accessible full-suspension MTB

Weight14.95 kg
Type of MTB ridingDown-country

The Scott Spark 970 12V holds a strategic position: that of a performant full-suspension without crossing the psychological barrier of 2000 €. Compared to the Lapierre Zesty CF 7.9 (second in this comparison) which offers a carbon frame for 700 € more, this Spark relies on an aluminum Spark Alloy SL 6011 chassis to keep costs down while retaining the proven architecture of the range. The technical setup reveals measured choices. The RockShox Judy Silver TK fork provides 130 mm of travel, coupled with an X-Fusion NUDE 5 RLX shock with 120 mm at the rear and the Scott Twinlock 2 Tech system which simultaneously controls suspension and dropper post. This combination places the bike in the small-travel trail category, suited for rolling terrain rather than technical descents.

The Sram NX/SX Eagle 12-speed (11-50 teeth) drivetrain with a 32-tooth chainring constitutes an "entry/mid-level" but functional setup. The Shimano MT201 2-piston brakes with 180 mm discs represent the most visible compromise: adequate for moderate use, but quickly limited on technical descents or for heavier riders. At a stated 14.95 kg, the Spark 970 nevertheless displays a controlled weight for an aluminum bike at this price. Syncros wheels (as expected from Scott) X-30SE with 30 mm internal rims and Schwalbe Wicked Will 2.4" tubeless-ready tires reflect equipment coherent with the positioning. Finally, we'll mention the conservative geometry (head angle at 67.2° across all sizes) which favors climbing stability over aggressive descending. All in all,its price positioning makes it an accessible entry into the world of high-performance full-suspension MTBs.

Lapierre Spicy CF 6.9, a carbon full suspension MTB with excellent value for money

CharacteristicsDetails
FrameCarbon: Spicy Full Carbon 180mm travel (29''), pressfit, boost, metric, Thru axle

MTB riding typeEnduro

The idea behind the Lapierre Spicy CF 6.9 is simple: to offer you a carbon frame built for competition (the very same used by the pro team Lapierre Zipp Collective) without forcing you to sell a kidney for the equipment. The big highlight is obviously the Spicy Full Carbon frame. Lapierre has integrated a pretty brilliant "dual-pivot" system: you can set it up in High Pivot for grinding bikeparks, or in Low Pivot for smoother pedaling. The brand goes as far as customizing the wheels, since you can ride classic 29-inch wheels or switch to a "Mullet" setup (29" front, 27.5" rear) to gain agility in tight spots.

To absorb impacts, you have no less than 180 mm of travel. The RockShox ZEB Select RC fork and the Vivid Base shock form a dynamic duo capable of smoothing out any minefield. And to stop the beast once launched, Shimano 4-piston brakes with 203 mm discs ensure you won’t end up off track. Back to the frame, with a head angle of 63.5°, this Spicy is a downhill war machine: stable, reassuring, and precise. To climb back up, the 78° seat angle places you well over the pedals to avoid suffering too much from the slope.

The only small downside, or rather Lapierre’s strategic choice, is on the transmission. It’s a mix of Shimano Deore and SLX. It’s reliable, solid, but inevitably a bit less smooth and heavier than a high-end group. This is the necessary compromise to keep a "humane" price on a bike with such a chassis. A little mystery though: Lapierre doesn’t disclose the final weight, but with this build, don’t expect a lightweight record.

Lapierre Zesty CF 9.9, a very interesting AM

CharacteristicsDetails
FrameCarbon: Zesty Full Carbon 150mm travel (29’’), pressfit, boost, metric, Thru axle
ForkRockShox Lyrik Select+ Charger 3 RC2

MTB riding typeAll-Mountain

We stay with Lapierre with the Zesty CF 9.9, a very interesting and well-positioned AM aimed at demanding all-mountain riders looking for high-performance equipment without tipping into the very high-end. Just like its smaller sibling, it features a full carbon frame that integrates a 150 mm travel kinematic, with geometry redesigned around a 77° seat angle and short chainstays (433 to 443 mm depending on size). This setup promotes better weight distribution and a centered position on the bike. The reach ranges from 435 mm in size S to 505 mm in XL, while the head angle remains at 64.5° across all sizes, a value well suited to the proposed travel.

The transmission is electronic and handled by a Sram GX Eagle AXS T-TYPE 12 speed, which is the main selling point of this version. This wireless technology, combined with a 10-52 teeth cassette and a 32 teeth chainring, offers an interesting value for money compared to higher-end AXS systems. For braking, we find the Sram Code Bronze Stealth 4-pistons with 200/180 mm rotors, a good mid-range choice from Sram.

The suspension pairs a 150 mm RockShox Lyrik Select+ Charger 3 RC2 fork with a Super Deluxe Ultimate RC2T shock in Trunnion 205x60 mm configuration. The DT Swiss XCM1501 Spline wheels with Sram XD freehub body support Maxxis Assegai 3C MaxxGrip 2.50 WT tires in front and Dissector 3C MaxxTerra 2.40 WT at the rear, a choice oriented towards grip rather than speed.

BMC Fourstroke 01 Three, a technical XCO World Cup race base at a contained price

MTB riding typeCross-Country

The BMC Fourstroke 01 Three has a clear goal: to offer a technical XCO World Cup race base at a price under €5000. And it succeeds; for this, this BMC MTB uses BMC's Premium 01 carbon frame, the very same used by the BMC MTB Racing Team, with APS suspension and 100 mm travel. The difference with more expensive versions lies in the choice of components, here a complete Shimano SLX 12-speed drivetrain. On paper, the setup remains coherent for demanding XC. The RockShox SID SL Select 3P fork (110 mm) and the SidLuxe Select+ 3P shock form a proven duo, while the DT Swiss X 1900 wheels (25 mm internal width) mounted Boost 148 mm guarantee the necessary stiffness. The geometry adopts a 67.5° head angle — more open than classic XCO standards — reflecting the Fourstroke’s adaptation to modern technical courses. The announced weight of 12.1 kg remains correct without being exceptional, offset by the integrated X-Fusion Manic dropper seatpost (100 or 125 mm depending on size), a rare feature at this price level.

The gap with our "top" bike of this ranking, the Scott Spark RC SL at €12499, reminds you that this Fourstroke 01 Three skips high-end components to make the reference frame accessible. The main compromise concerns the drivetrain: the SLX group, although reliable, shows its limits in terms of weight and precision compared to XT or XTR groupsets. The SLX brakes with 160 mm rotors front/rear are also a visible cost-saving point. So, we recommend this magnificent Fourstroke to experienced XCO racers looking for an upgradable platform.

Scott Ransom 900 RC, the best carbon enduro MTB 2026

MTB disciplineDH

We end this comparison with the Scott Ransom 900 RC and let's say it right away: this is the most committed bike in our selection. Its philosophy is clear: prioritize downhill performance without ever compromising frame precision.

To achieve this, Scott has equipped this Ransom with an HMX carbon frame using a 6 Link kinematics that allows steering angle adjustments. However, it is the full Fox Factory suspension that truly defines its character. Up front, the Fox 38 Float Factory fork with Grip 2 cartridge delivers 170 mm of travel, coupled with HSC, LSC, HSR and LSR adjustments to finely tune shock response. At the rear, the Fox Float X NUDE Factory EVOL Piggy Back Trunnion shock offers the same 170 mm travel, adjustable down to 130 mm via three modes: Climb, Ramp Control, and Descend. A duo made for those of us who link technical sections and expect a suspension that manages both harsh compressions and fast sequences.

On the drivetrain side, the Sram X0 T-Type AXS 12-speed brings wireless technology with an XS-1295 cassette in 10-52 teeth and a 32-tooth chainring. The gear range is thus very wide, even if, let's admit it, the weight of 15.2 kg remains considerable for a carbon frame — the price for such a complete setup. Braking is entrusted to Sram Code Ultimate Stealth four-piston calipers, paired with 200 mm HS2 rotors front and rear.

Finally, the wheels, Race Face Turbine R 30 in 29 inches with 30 mm internal rim width, are fitted with a Maxxis Assegai 2.5" upfront (EXO, 3C Maxx Grip) and a Dissector 2.4" at the rear (Double Down, 3C Maxx Terra). In short, the ideal MTB if you want to use it in truly demanding enduro.
