What is a bike computer?
A bike computer is used to measure the distance, average speed and altitude difference of a route. Depending on the models, you can monitor your heart rate thanks to a belt worn on the thorax (the bike computer cardio), the chronometer, the pedaling frequency...
Most bicycle computers are wireless and work with cells or a battery. A sensor is located on the fork and a magnet on the spoke. When the magnet passes in front of the sensor, the speed is calculated according to the circumference of the wheel and the distance traveled.
The bike computer is attached to the handlebar of the bike, note that the MTB computer is identical to the road bike computer.
The traditional bike computer
A traditional bike computer typically measures instantaneous speed, average speed, maximum speed, daily distance and total distance traveled. It displays the time and the time traveled. Some bike computers also measure the altitude and the uneveness of the route as well as the temperature.
GPS bike computers
A GPS bike computer offers a wealth of features like navigation, statistics for tracking workouts by recording distances, speed and heart rate, pedaling rate and power. Connected to a smartphone, the GPS bike computer allows you to save your route data and to share it via a community. Finally, some GPS bike computers even allow you to consult the weather in real time.
