The MTB wheels are made to resist to almost anything!

The wheels are one of the most important elements on your MTB, just like the fork. The MTB wheels are specific and meet extreme requirements. Being the point of contact with the ground, they must be able to take on a large number of constraints: shocks, stones, brittle descents, recurring harsh weather conditions...

Like road wheels, lightness is also important in a MTB, especially in cross-country. For the other MTB disciplines, the wheel must be survive big shocks and remain straight.

Another important criterion for riders looking for MTB rims is the versatility, which often combines comfort, lightness and resistance.

New standards for MTB wheels

In recent years the models of wheels have greatly evolved in MTB. The 29 inch wheel has made its appearance it's a wheel size that approximates the standard of the road bike. This dimension is gaining more and more followers who appreciate the comfort, the traction and the effectiveness of the 29 "" in mountain biking.

For those who are still reluctant to adopt this large format of MTB wheels, the former standard is still there: the 27.5"". This rim size makes it possible to find a good compromise between a 26 and 29 inch MTB wheel.

However, we must not forget the 26 inch that has been the standard in mountain biking for several years in the past: it allows great manoeuvrability however the format tends to disappear and isn't has efficient on rolling sections.

On our Alltricks.com website, you'll find the right MTB wheels for your practice, in the size you want, among the best brands available: Mavic, DT Swiss, Fulcrum, Halo...

Find all our wheels on Alltricks.com at unbeatable prices with fast delivery.

Mountain Bike Wheels

Choose the right mountain bike wheels can be tricky, they are among the most confusing components you can buy for your MTB.
Along with tyres, wheels help you to cover the terrain that you choose to ride on.
The right wheels will change completly the bike feel so it is very important to choose them carefully.

Today, most mountain bike wheels are made from alloy. Alloy offer a good mix of weight and durability. Few high hand wheels are made from carbon but they are very expensive.

Wheel Size

Today, there are three main sizes available. Only one size will be compatible with your bike so don't make a mistake when choosing your new mountain bike wheelset.
-26 inch wheels: the most common wheel size.
-27.5 inch wheels (650b): this size is the midway point between 26 inch wheels and 29 inch wheels. They offer advantages of both format: smoother rider than 26"" wheels and more stifness and durability than 29"" wheels.
-29 inch wheels (29er) : this is the largest wheel option. Common size on the latest Cross Country bikes and few all mountain bikes.

Axle Size

The wheel size is not the only thing to look at when buying a new wheelset. Indeed, there are a number of different axle fittings.
-QR axle (Quick Release): common on many entry level MTB, if your bike is so equipped, if you choose a wheelset with QR axles, chances are they will be comaptible.
-Thru axle: several variants are available on the markets. 100x15mm and 100x20mm are common for front wheels and 142x12mm is the predominant format for rear wheels.

Read the user manual of your forks and frame to know the exact axle sizes. Please note that Thru axles comes with your frame and forks but not with the wheels.

Braking Surface

Today, nearly all MTB come with disk brakes so Rims tend not to have a machined braking surface. Most Hubs have a rotor mounting system: 6 bolts is the common standard, Shimano Centerlock is the second option available on few bikes.

Mountain Bike Rims

Depending the rim, a mountain bike wheelset can be Tubeless or not.
Inner tubes have the advantage to be easy to install and inexpensive but tubeless offer other advantages such as a better resistance to flatting and can be run at lower pressures for better traction and comfort.
-Standard rims are designed to be used with an inner tube and a TubeTyper tyre.
-Tubeless rims requires few pieces to achieve the sealed system: a tubeless valve, a rim tape, sealant and a tubeless ready or tubeless tyre.

Rims come in different widths. Narrower rims are found on XC bikes (17mm to 20mm). All mountain, Enduro, Freeride and DH bikes have wider rims, 20mm and plus.

Weight

The lighest mountain bikes wheels weight around 1300g. Generally speaking, a MTB wheelset weight in the region of 1700g to 2000g.
In general, lighter wheels are prefered over heavier ones as the reduced mass allow a quicker handling and easier climbing.
Generally speaking, less weight is more when it comes to cost.
