Weather on the trails turns fast, and faster still in the mountains. The trail jacket is the third layer of the clothing system, the one acting as a direct shield against the weather. Its job is to keep rain, snow and wind off the runner while holding a comfortable microclimate close to the skin. A good jacket balances waterproofing, which blocks what comes from outside, against breathability, which stops the sauna effect during hard cardiovascular work. Current models compete on technicality to deliver maximum protection at minimum weight.
Choosing the membrane sits at the centre of how a trail jacket is designed. Waterproof ratings, measured in Schmerber, and breathability ratings, given as MVTR, are the numbers that matter. A high-quality membrane keeps water droplets out while letting the vapour your body heat generates escape. Ultra-trail races often make strict standards mandatory, commonly around 10,000 Schmerber. Mechanical venting, such as underarm zips or back openings, works alongside the membrane to improve airflow.
A trail runner carries kit on his back for hours, so the jacket cannot become a burden when it isn't being worn. Manufacturers develop ultralight textiles that fold into their own pocket and take up almost nothing in a hydration pack. That extreme packability keeps protection within reach without eating the space you need for water and nutrition. Despite the thin fabrics, ripstop fibres stop a tear spreading when you snag a branch or a rock.
A trail jacket has to follow the body without ever restricting it. Athletic, close-fitting cuts stop the fabric flapping in the wind, which cuts aerodynamic drag and the irritating noise that comes with it. Ergonomic hoods, sometimes with built-in visors, sit snugly around the head and turn with your gaze without blocking your field of vision. Thumb loops at the cuffs and drawcords at the waist lock the fit and keep cold air from getting in. Some models are even designed to be worn straight over the pack.
