How do you choose your workshop stand?

Is your bottom bracket creaking? Is your chain skipping on your cassette? It's probably time to do some repairs on your bike. Of course, you can call a professional for this. But you could also do it yourself. In that case, a workstand seems essential. It will allow you to work at the desired height, stabilize your bike... The main selection criteria will be the height adjustment of the stand, the maximum possible weight of the bike it can hold, the type of bike attachment, the possibility of transporting your stand, and finally, ergonomics.

Choose a clamp workstand or a multiple support workstand?

Most workstands on the market will allow you to hang your bike with a clamp. This is the solution we recommend most to individuals because it is the quickest and simplest to set up. The clamp will allow you to hang the bike by the seat tube or by the frame. However, if you have an aerodynamic seatpost or a telescoping seatpost, most clamp stands will not be compatible. In this case, you will need to prefer a multiple support stand (bottom bracket and front fork) or a high-end clamp model like the Park Tool PCS-9.3.

Warning: We strongly recommend buying a workstand with an adjustable clamp to facilitate the handling of your bike. It should be able to be rotatable and height-adjustable.

Pay attention to the maximum supported weight

Each workstand, depending on its geometry, weight, base, etc., will be able to support a maximum bike weight.

The standard is about twenty kilograms. This will therefore be largely sufficient if you have a road bike or even a mountain bike.

However, if you have succumbed to the electric fairy, be careful as most electric bikes indeed exceed 20 kilos. In this case, prefer a workstand supporting at least 25 kilos, and even 30 kilos ideally to keep a margin.

Prefer a foldable model?

Depending on the use you make of it, it can be practical to be able to transport your workstand. Or simply if you want to store it in a small corner of your garage. For this, pay attention to two criteria.

Firstly, the type of base of your workstand. In most cases, it will be a set of 2, 3, or 4 retractable legs. This will therefore pose no problem for folding your stand. However, on some professional models like the VAR Professionnel Double, the base is a heavy metal plate that will be difficult to transport. Some models like the Bike Original Veloworks also have a fixed, non-foldable base. These models, although more stable, are therefore not to be preferred for transport.

Secondly, some models will be more suited to "travel" than others thanks to their more contained weight and smaller size once folded. Park Tool models will be preferred here. The PCS-10.3 model is thus content with a little more than a meter (1140 mm) in length for only 37 centimeters in width.

The tool tray, a real plus

One of the elements to consider that could make the difference when choosing your product will be the possibility of adding a tray to place your tools on the stand.

Indeed, what could be more annoying than looking for your screwdriver while you want to adjust your derailleur? To address this issue, many brands now offer a tray to place your tools, small screws, cables, etc.

This is a real plus that we advise you to consider, although most models on the current market (Neatt Oxygen, Neatt Attack, Park Tool PCS 10.3, etc.) offer it.
