The Hypervolt Go 2 from Hyperice is kind of the massage gun that answers the question everyone asks: can you get something really effective without emptying your bank account? The answer is yes, and that's exactly why it earns its spot here as the best value for money in this comparison.Let's start with what immediately stands out: 680 grams. To put that in context, it's about the weight of a large water bottle half full, in other words, you barely feel it in your bag. The compact size (17 x 18.5 x 5 cm) does the rest, and Hyperice even specifies that the device is TSA approved for air travel (handy if you’ve got calves to recover after a long-haul flight to a distant hiking spot).

On the motor side, the 40W brushless with QuietGlide® technology does what you ask of it: hit without roaring like a drill in a Haussmann apartment. It's quiet, and that’s a real plus when you’re using it at night after a long day of walking without wanting to disturb half the lodge. The 3 percussion speeds let you adjust according to what’s in your legs, from light Sunday aches to real soreness after the GR20 trek.

The advertised battery life of 3 hours per charge is decent for regular use, provided you don’t forget to recharge before you leave (watch out if you’re the type to always let your phone die at 2%).Where we'll be honest is about the attachments: only two (flat and ball), which cover the essentials but leave little room to target very specific areas. The marketing description talks about a "portable massage therapist"... let's say rather a good muscular assistant who knows a trick or two.

Therabody Theragun Mini 3.0, the best compact massage gun

Weight400 g

Second in our ranking, the Therabody Theragun Mini 3.0 is, in our opinion, the best compact massage gun. Indeed, despite its compact design, 20% smaller and 30% lighter than the previous generation, its battery life is 150 minutes with adjustable speeds ranging from 1750 to 2400 PPM. Not bad, admit it. One of the other strengths of this Theragun Mini 3.0 is its Bluetooth compatibility, which allows access to a library of personalized wellness routines via the Therabody mobile app. This feature is especially useful for those who want a customized massage, adapted to their specific needs.

Once ordered (from Alltricks, we hope), the Theragun Mini 3.0 will come with three therapy attachments: a standard ball, a damper, and a thumb-shaped attachment. Each attachment has a specific use: the standard ball is ideal for general massage, the damper is perfect for sensitive areas, and the thumb-shaped attachment is designed to target specific tension points. Three attachments compared to the competition may seem few, but remember the goal of this gun: to be compact.

By the way, speaking of competition. Compared to other models in the same price range, the Theragun Mini 3.0 stands out with advanced features typical of higher-end models. For example, the Hyperice Hypervolt Go 2 models offer longer battery life of 180 minutes but do not provide adjustable speeds nor Bluetooth compatibility. The Compex Fixx Mini, for its part, offers a higher maximum speed (2500 PPM) but shorter battery life (90-120 minutes) and fewer customization options.

After the Therabody Theragun Mini 2.0, the Compex Fixx™ Mini also proves to be a very good compact and discreet massage gun. Discreet because its motor is ultra-quiet (less than 60 dB at 2500 PPM). You will appreciate it (or not) for its ergonomic design, adapted to the palm of your hand and its light weight. For fans of a true “gun,” know that it’s possible to add an extension handle (sold separately) to reach difficult areas, like the back or shoulders.

Besides its compactness, one of the major advantages of the Fixx™ Mini is its compatibility with the attachments of the Fixx™ 1.0 and 2.0 models. This flexibility allows you to personalize your massage experience according to your specific needs. For example, the attachments can be used to target different body areas, such as deep muscles or more sensitive zones.

In terms of battery life, the Fixx™ Mini offers a usage time of 90 to 120 minutes, which is comparable to other models in the same price range, such as the Therabody Theragun Mini 2.0. However, unlike other models like the Therabody Theragun Prime G5, which features an OLED screen and Bluetooth connectivity, the Fixx™ Mini focuses on the essentials: an effective and customizable massage with a multitude of attachments available after purchase.

Therabody Theragun Mini Plus, the best small heated massage gun

We change the game with the Theragun Mini Plus from Therabody, and for good reason: it is currently the only compact massage gun to feature a heating function. Not just another gimmick on a product sheet, but a real functional difference; according to the brand, the combination of heat and percussions would allow for recovery up to 3 times faster than percussions alone. "Up to 3 times"... you take that number with the usual caution reserved for marketing claims, but the basic idea remains solid: heat relaxes muscle tissues deeply, and that’s hard to deny whether you’re sore after a trail run in the Vosges or simply stiff in the back after six hours of cycling.

In terms of format, the Mini Plus delivers on its promise of compactness with its 156 x 115 x 130 mm size and comes with a travel case, which makes slipping it into a sports bag or suitcase easy. However, be wary of the weight: 886 grams on the scale is rather on the higher end for a device sold as an "ultra-portable travel gun." We’ve seen lighter. We forgive this slight drawback because charging is done via USB-C, which avoids carrying an additional charger. Add to that Bluetooth connectivity with the Therabody app, which adds a welcome layer of customization to control your sessions from your phone.

We’ll finish by saying that the heated attachment is included right away, which is a good thing, but note that the Cold Plus and Vibration Plus attachments are sold separately (Therabody thinks of everyone, especially their margins). If the idea of switching between heat, cold, and pure vibration interests you, you’ll have to budget accordingly.

Therabody Theragun Pro Plus, THE best massage gun

Maximum Speed3180 PPM (53 Hz)
Treatment Range16 mm
MotorQuietForce Solution
Battery LifeN/A
Connectionbluetooth

AccessoryIntegrated LED light therapy, built-in biometric sensor, heat therapy head, vibration therapy head, USB-C charging cable
Weight1.65 kg

We conclude this comparison with the premium segment with the Theragun PRO Plus from Therabody, and let's be clear: it takes the crown in this selection. Not because the brand shouts it from the rooftops, but because this massage gun doesn’t just hit the muscle; it combines five different therapies in one device, which remains quite rare on the market and worth paying attention to.

Concretely, you’re dealing with a 16 mm stroke percussion, representing a deep and effective strike to reach serious muscle tensions (not the soreness after a Sunday morning jog, mind you, but those after a real hard day in the mountains). Added to that is vibration therapy at three frequencies, adjustable heat in three levels up to 55 °C (which, to put in context, corresponds to a serious muscle warm-up far beyond just “pleasantly warm”), and integrated LED infrared light therapy to work on joints and tissues deeply.

Therabody communicates about a joint action of all that to “push your performance limits”… let’s rather say it will seriously help you recover, without unfortunately rewriting the laws of physiology. The patented triangular handle also deserves mention: it really allows you to reach areas usually tough to massage on your own, especially the middle of your back, without looking like a contortionist. Finally, the LCD screen, five attachments delivered from the start, and Bluetooth connection to the Therabody app complete the whole with a true guided-use logic. However, beware of one point: the device weighs 1.65 kg without attachment, which you’ll feel during prolonged use; it’s not a tool you handle one-handed for twenty minutes without noticing it.

Why use a massage gun?

The massage gun is one of the most popular recovery devices in the sports world today. After massage rollers and electrostimulation, massage guns optimize muscle recovery but also prepare your muscles before effort through vibration massage. A therapeutic tool that has become indispensable for any amateur or professional athlete, regardless of their preferred sport.

Before effort: a short use of 30 seconds allows your muscles to oxygenate and speeds up blood circulation.

After effort: it helps reduce tensions accumulated during physical exercise and lowers injury risks.

In case of muscle or joint injuries: it has a massaging effect to help eliminate tendinitis and muscle tears. Increased blood flow will nourish the muscle for its reconstruction.

How to choose your massage gun?

In just a few years, some companies specializing in therapeutic muscle recovery have turned to developing massage guns. Discover the important elements to consider before purchasing your first massage gun:

  • Strokes per second: This is simply the percussion speed of massage guns. Like the hands of a physiotherapist, massage guns deliver more or less pressure on your body. It is therefore essential to choose a massage gun with an adjustable percussion speed according to your needs. A speed of 20 to 30 percussions per second will be suitable for preparing your muscle or massaging a sensitive injury. From 30 to 50 percussions per second, you will be able to work on the recovery of your muscles after effort or on a muscle knot.
  • Ergonomics of the handle of a massage gun: As you have surely noticed, massage guns are not all the same due to their shapes and the handle’s inclination. Theragun massage guns have been designed to reach the most difficult areas of your body without the help of a third person. This triangular handle design was also adopted by the brand Compex. This format was also chosen to offer a handle inclinable in several positions. Other massage guns like Hypervolt or Jolt feature a simpler “L” design. A lighter design, but which restricts its use on difficult areas.
  • The noise level of a massage gun: The first massage guns were a bit noisy. The noise caused by your massage gun can be a hindrance to its use, whether at the gym before and after your workouts or at home if you don’t live alone. Today, massage guns have evolved and their motors are, for the most part, quieter. They are around 50 decibels, which represents the noise of a TV or a conversation between two people.
  • Battery life: The preparation and recovery work for each muscle can represent a considerable usage time. If you plan to use your massage gun frequently, choose one with suitable battery life to avoid any inconvenience.

What to remember from this comparison of the best massage guns?

You’ve understood, the choice of your massage gun mainly depends on your use. For people practicing bodybuilding, street workout or cross training, choose a massage gun with an ergonomic handle and if possible with an inclinable head. You will find it easier to reach difficult areas. For so-called outdoor sports (cycling, running, trail, climbing), go for a simpler massage gun that will be suitable for the recovery of targeted muscles, mainly legs and upper body.

Alltricks tip: if you practice indoor sports, prefer a quiet massage gun so as not to disturb other practitioners.
